The Illusion of Simplicity
As people, we have the tendency to underestimate the complexity. It’s our cognitive bias that can easily lead us to a point when we start to oversimplify complex problems and, thus, come to incorrect assumptions and flawed decisions.
We find ourselves in a particular state of mind that can be described as the illusion of simplicity.
The illusion of simplicity is a cognitive bias that leads people to underestimate the complexity of a task or situation, often due to focusing on only the most visible or apparent aspects and neglecting underlying complexity or nuance.
The illusion of simplicity can also arise when people rely too heavily on simplistic models or heuristics to make decisions. While these tools, in simplifying complex information, are helpful, they can also take us to oversimplification and misunderstanding of the underlying complexity.
So, we must always pay attention to the limitations of heuristics and simplistic models, and be aware of them in order to effectively counteract the arising biases in our decision-making processes.
